What is snoring
besides a nuisance?

Most everyone is aware of the term! Over 10% of couples sleep in separate rooms because of snoring. The sound of snoring is made by a vibration of soft tissue in the back of the throat. When we lie down at night and the jaws relax, the mouth drops open, causing airflow over the tongue and soft tissue. Whether or not apnea is occurring, snoring is a sign that oxygen flow is being restricted and a lot of health conditions are the result.

Sleep Apnea

There are over 30 million people who have sleep apnea and they may or may not know it. The truth is, left untreated, you can die in your sleep or at the very least, die earlier than you should! Apnea is when the body stops breathing for 10s or longer several times an hour. The body responds by gasping, oxygen levels go down and the stress hormone cortisol is released. These respiratory events occur, for some, 2,000-3,000 times a night. Your body should be resting peacefully and recovering, while instead it is literally fighting for its life.

Treatment

Sleep Apnea can only be diagnosed by a sleep physician. It is diagnosed by sleep studies, either take home or in a sleep lab. The problem is most people do not want to take the sleep study or do the recommended treatment, so most do nothing. The treatment options are CPAP or oral appliance therapy. Because of masks and hoses, only 18% of CPAP patients use their CPAP. Studies have also shown that 16% of patients never turned it on. Oral appliances have been shown to have a compliance rate of 90%. Studies have shown that if patents could at least wear something for at least 4 hours a night, their health would improve.

The Ease of an Appliance

There are many appliances and there are side effects besides better health. Some side effects could be bite change, slight tooth movement, aggravation to joints. This is why it is very important to consult with someone experienced in sleep and tmj to help you find the appropriate appliance therapy.

“I will be helping you through oral appliance therapy. The important thing is once you know you have this problem, then you can work on finding a solution that works for you.

Appliance therapy’s side effects can be joint discomfort and/or  bite changes. However, my belief is a small price to pay for better health. My family has been treated this way and most dentists treat themselves, family and friends this way.

I am happy to have a consult with you. Fill out the form on the contact page with your phone number as well as good times to call and I will reach out to you.

My hope is to offer this service and help find the “right fit” for every patient. Many Blessings!”
